The website and its purpose

The Internet offers an abundance of free articles on a broad spectrum of subjects. I used some of them for the construction of the Boxer Menu and the test of HaXml. It seemed only natural to share my findings with other people on a small website.

Krowland.net is a pun on my name (cf. infra), hence the spelling mistake. Finding a decent name was quite an ordeal, but I hit upon "krowland" in 2006 after a splendid exhibition on Caspar David Friedrich in Essen (Germany). The Tree of Crows was on display there among other wonderful paintings. At first, I wanted to use the painting in the design of the site, but I proved not enough of a designer for that. Instead, I browsed the Open Clipart Library for designs. The crow was made by one kesigomu, the corner decoration by Jean-Victor Balin and the background by Alan Horkan. The design does not contain a lot of colours because I am terrible at picking them, even with colour schemes. Black and white just seemed right.

It is quite possible that the site will grow in the future. Some people even seemed interested in contributing, but it all depends on my spare time.

The website's maker

This site was made by Koen Roelandt. He lives in Belgium, which apparently does not exist. How's that for an introduction?

Koen graduated as a Bachelor in Dutch and English Language and Literature at the University of Brussels and as a Master in the same subject at the University of Leuven. His thesis discussed the themes of marriage, religion and imagination in "Gregoria. Een huwelijk op Elseneur. Esoterische Memorabilia 1938.", a novel by the obscure Flemish writer Maurice Gilliams. In 2000 and 2001 he did a postgraduate degree in Medieval Studies at the University of Glasgow.

On entering the job market, it was extremely difficult to find employment. This was remedied by following a training in web development. Koen is mainly interested in the web standards, XHTML, CSS, usability and accessibility. He currently works as an educational designer for bpost.

Koen is crazy about music and "plays" the guitar (opinions vary on whether it can be called "playing"). He reads a lot, enjoys alternative movies, running and hiking. He also likes to refer to himself in the third person in order to avoid writing "I" 39 times on one page.
